Hörmann was founded in Germany in 1935. Since then, this family-owned operation has expanded to offer premium garage doors to Europe, parts of Asia and North America. It has operated directly in the United States since 2006 and currently operates a 300,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Tennessee. Homeowners have access to American-made products built through sustainable means and engineered with security in mind when shopping with Hörmann.

Hörmann Garage Door Types Overview

Generally, Hörmann provides the following to residential and commercial clients:

These are the most common door type. Hörmann sectional doors feature four panels running horizontally with pinch-resistant hinges on the insides of the panels. They come with almost any of the design schemes and window options listed.

This is a largely-European market offering. Such doors are constructed as a single piece that swings out while lifting directly up. They may require outside clearance equaling half of the door’s height in order to safely open.

Like up-and-over doors, this is not a typical US offering. These do not require an opener, and swing outward from the middle to open.

This is a product line primarily marketed towards commercial clients due to its space-saving roll-up design. These are a lighter aluminum option in most cases.

Martin’s Innovative Safety Features

Industry-Leading Pinch Protection

Martin doors come with  a few distinctive safety features that make it a great pick for families with smaller children. First, Martin’s patented pinch protective joints make it so you won’t get your fingers caught between panels while operating your door. These joints hold interior panels together with no separation.

These doors also come with optional hardware that includes safety spring and safety track systems which catch your door if it suddenly falls due to spring failures. You’ll have to use Martin-specific tracks and rollers to get the full benefit of these features.

Secure Construction and Break-In Protection

Additionally, Martin garage doors come with a few built-in features to prevent malicious alterations or break-ins. These include:

  • Concealed lift cables: Martin Premium cables are rated for 2,000 pounds and are outfitted with extra connector loop protection for reinforcement.
  • Low-profile hinges: Constructed of 16-gauge steel, these help minimize and eliminate gaps during operation.
  • Martin premium springs: Rated for 30,000 operation cycles
  • Interior locks: Martin’s premium hardware offers security via locks that slide into your tracks.

Martin Garage Door Materials and Construction

Martin’s steel doors feature eight layers, including the steel itself. This enamel and finish helps to ensure that these doors maintain maximum resistance to corrosion and rust. These layers, starting from the exterior, are as follows:

  • Optional powder coat
  • Baked-on enamel paint
  • Primary enamel coat
  • Hot-dipped galvanizing
  • Stainless steel
  • Hot-dipped galvanizing
  • Primary enamel coat
  • Baked-on enamel paint

All steel doors are made from 24-gauge material with the protective layering listed. Optional insulation includes either polyurethane spray or polystyrene with R-8, R-14 or R-18 heat resistance.

Copper doors are marketed to homeowners who want a distinctive look for their homes. These offerings don’t have a protective covering or enamel. Rather, they are meant to develop a patina over time. This ultimately makes all copper doors unique after a few years on a home.

You’ll be able to purchase antique hardware to match the unique appearance. This includes hinges and lift handles. You can also purchase white powder coated rails and interior hardware.

Your patina functions similarly to an enamel coating and prevents corrosion. However, we still recommend cleaning every four to six months. These doors are more expensive, but can last up to 50 years.

All Martin aluminum doors come with similar layered construction to its steel offerings. They are also outfitted with an all-steel frame and numerous contemporary and classic design schemes. You’ll have access to options with and without windows. This optional glass has a few tint and enamel options to match most shades and home exteriors, including blackout and clear film.

Additionally, insulation is available between R-8 and R-14, making it a good lightweight option for temperate climates. These doors can last up to 20 years with proper maintenance.

Over the decades, Martin has put a lot of effort into the design of its doors. This has helped them to maintain a reputation as one of the top manufacturers for residential doors. Custom door options include:

  • 24-gauge steel or 14-gauge aluminum
  • Insulation options ranging between R-8 and R-18
  • Optional fixtures including mail slots, vents and both outer and inner locks
  • Pinch-proof joints
  • Numerous paint and enamel finishes
  • Safety track and spring systems
  • Premium-grade custom springs

Again, getting multiple quotes from some of our top garage door pros is a good idea when shopping around. Aside from gaining insight into your pricing, licensed technicians will be able to help match a new garage door to your current home exterior.

Hörmann Smart Features and Technology

Hörmann markets two opener brands which are compatible with different mobile apps for integration into your existing smart home network.

First, its own SilentDrive opener works with its BiSecur mobile operation system. This app can integrate with garage door openers, front door locks and property gate locks to offer worldwide control from your smartphone. You can set an approved list of users for convenient operation for the entire family.

Next, the LiftMaster door openers Hörmann sells are compatible with myQ home security systems. Coupled with its camera and door code options, you can remote operate your door from anywhere. This includes video keypads and object detection functions.

Hörmann Garage Door Pricing and Value

Generally, Hörmann is seen as more of a luxury garage door, relative to many other products. Entry-level models, such as the Pro Tech line, can sell for between $1,500 and $2,500 per door. This comes with your choice of five panel designs and 12 color options.

Another Reddit user was quoted a rate of $8,276 for installation of a Modern Classic 7500 double-wide door with a motor. This door comes with three panel designs, nine color choices and multiple glass and tint options, with insulated glass available. Most motors cost between $800 and $1,500 fully installed on their own.

As you can see, pricing for a new garage door varies greatly. We encourage you to get quotes from Hörmann or any of the other top manufacturers we’ve reviewed at Garage.com to learn more about your potential price range. The following will affect your overall cost:

  • Door size
  • Material
  • Hardware requirements
  • Installation for a new opener
  • Installation for new rails
  • Insulation
  • Smart technology or opener integration into your smart home

DASMA, the Door & Access Systems Manufacturers’ Association, cites the Remodeling Magazine Cost vs. Value Report to state that new garage door installation can net 193% return on investment if you sell your home. Your actual ROI will depend on a few factors, like insulation, opener quality and how in-demand your chosen door design is.

Hörmann vs. Competing Garage Door Brands

We’ve compared Hörmann Doors to a few of its top alternatives on the market today. While this manufacturer nominally offers three design categories, it provides 18 individual door models with varying amounts of insulation, customization options and warranty periods:

BrandHörmannClopayAmarrWayne Dalton

Hörmann vs. Clopay Garage Doors

Both of these manufacturers are among the largest and most recognized in the business. Hörmann doors are a largely European product with some manufacturing hubs in the United States.

Many of these door series come with either polystyrene foam board or polyurethane injected spray foam insulation. Clopay’s options include R-values up to 20.4, while Hörmann features R-values up to 15.7. This highest value is in its Clima Tech 4400 line.

Clopay’s maximum warranty terms are an upgrade to Hörmann’s with a notable caveat. While Hörmann’s warranty is limited to up to six years, Clopay’s Gold Bar Warranty’s limited lifetime terms cost extra.

Hörmann vs. Amarr Garage Doors

Amarr operates 60 of its own warehouses across the US and distributes via a network of more than 4,000 garage pros and showrooms. After researching both brands, we found that Hörmann is the best pick for traditional wood options, while Amarr is a slightly better option for composite or metal.

We recommend that you contact your local showroom for installation rates and base door costs, as these can vary from location to location. One Reddit user quoted a rate of $5,337 when purchasing their three single Amarr Lincoln doors through Costco. This includes a discounted rate for shopping at this retailer.

Note that the above rate is for one of Amarr’s more basic models. Higher R-value lines will cost more, as will installing a LiftMaster or other opener brand through this provider.

Hörmann vs. Wayne Dalton Garage Doors

Wayne Dalton Garage Doors began operating in 1954 and now sells 12 lines of residential doors through Lowe’s stores across the US. It offers heavy duty doors with safety features, including its TorqueMaster counterbalance system. This contains the torsion springs inside a tube at the front of the garage and includes anti-drop protection.

As a bonus, Wayne Dalton offers WindSafe doors for high-wind areas, along with peak R-values of 16.22. Its WindSafe features include horizontal and vertical support bars and reinforced track systems to help ensure that your doors can withstand high winds or more extreme storms.

Finally, many of Wayne Dalton’s doors feature lifetime limited warranties. However, you’ll have to look at the coverage options for your specific door model to confirm this.

Hörmann Warranty, Service and Dealer Network

Hörmann’s doors have fairly straightforward warranty terms. All steel and aluminum doors come with lifetime warranties for their sections, and include protection against warping, splitting or  rusting through due to poor workmanship or factory errors.

Damage due to normal wear and tear is not covered. Similarly, steel doors located within 1.25 miles of an ocean shoreline have a shortened one-year warranty for its finishes and paint.

Steel door warranties

  • Sections: Limited lifetime
  • Hardware: Two to six years, depending on model
  • Springs: Three years

Aluminum door warranties

  • Sections: Limited lifetime
  • Hardware: Seven or eight years
  • Springs: Three years

Wood door warranties

  • Sections: One year
  • Hardware: Five years
  • Springs: Three years

Additionally, Hörmann warranties also state that maintenance should be handled by an approved technician. Claims must be submitted on a Quality Improvement Form via email, and claimants need to have their original bill of sale or receipt for coverage. All warranties are non-transferable.

Hörmann Garage Door Maintenance

We recommend a typical maintenance schedule for all Hörmann doors. Cleaning with a damp cloth and light- to medium-strength household cleaners should be sufficient for doors and tracks. Lightly lubricating all moving parts, including springs, rollers, hinges and lift chains will help to aid in silent operation and keep these components from rusting. We recommend silicone or white lithium-based lubricant.

Inspect and clean your doors every four to six months to maintain optimum performance. If you live in a high salinity area as outlined in this manufacturer’s warranty terms (within 1.25 miles of a shoreline,) conduct inspections and cleanings twice per season.

If your intended maintenance or repairs involve working with or replacing springs, rewiring parts of your garage door opener, or replacing a garage door lift chain, we recommend hiring a licensed pro.

Most homeowners and DIYers can handle the following:
