Genie’s roots date back to 1923, when it was founded as the Alliance Manufacturing Company. Alliance produced consumer, industrial and military products for decades before eventually manufacturing its first garage door unit in 1954. The name? You guessed it, Genie. It was the first mass-produced, radio-controlled residential garage door opener, and was quickly followed by the first direct-drive screw opener in 1958.

The Genie Company was purchased by the Overhead Door Corporation in 1994 and has since continued to produce high-quality, dependable commercial and residential garage door openers, parts and accessories. Its products are made in America, and all customer and technical support staff are also US-based.

Genie Garage Door Opener Models Overview

Genie Belt Drive Openers

Belt drives are quiet, durable and low-maintenance, making them one of the most popular drive types today. When the motor engages, a steel-reinforced rubber belt travels along the track to open and close the door. Our table offers a closer look at Genie’s 14 belt drive openers, including their average prices and standout features.

Genie Chain Drive Openers

Chain drives work similarly to belt drives, but use a sturdy metal chain instead of a belt to raise and lower the door. Chain drive garage door openers are louder than belt drives, but they’re budget-friendly, strong and widely available. Genie has seven residential chain drive garage door openers to choose from.

Genie Screw Drive Openers

Screw drive garage door openers rely on a threaded steel rod to facilitate the door’s movement. They’re smooth, quiet and generally require less maintenance than chain and belt drives. But keep in mind that extreme temperatures can cause the screw to expand and contract, which could lead to decreased efficiency and slower operation over time. Here’s a breakdown of Genie’s two Signature Series screw drive models.

Genie Jackshaft/Wall Mount Drive Openers

Jackshaft garage door openers, also referred to as wall mount openers, are quiet, space-saving units that use torsion tubes to move the door up and down. Instead of hanging from the ceiling, they’re located on the side of the garage door. Genie’s two jackshaft openers are:

Genie Smart Garage Door Opener Features

Many of Genie’s residential garage door openers are equipped with these proprietary smart features and security upgrades.

  • GenieSense Monitoring and Diagnostic Technology: This feature works like an around-the-clock garage door technician integrated into the motor. It continuously monitors the door, then stops it and alerts you if it detects an issue.
  • Intellicode Security Technology: Genies version of rolling code technology, which changes the access code every time you open or close the door.
  • Patented Dual Frequency Technology: Enables constant communication between all Genie products to maximize the range of radio frequency devices.
  • Alladin Connect: The opener’s integrated WiFi allows you to control your garage door from anywhere through the Alladin Connect app. It’s also compatible with Smart Home platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Siri and Samsung Bixby.

Some models are also compatible with in-car remote control platforms, including HomeLink and Car2U.

Genie Garage Door Opener Pricing and Value

The average price of Genie’s residential garage door openers ranges from $160 to $430. Chain drives are the least expensive, followed by belt drives, then screw and jackshaft drives. How much you’ll pay also depends on other factors like horsepower and whether it’s integrated with security or smart home features.

Genie Garage Door Opener Maintenance and Care

Like all garage door openers, Genie’s products require seasonal and annual maintenance to maximize their longevity and performance. Consult your owner’s manual for opener-specific maintenance requirements, but here are some typical procedures you should perform at least twice per year.

  • Lubricate all moving parts with a silicone-based product
  • Visually inspect the tracks and clean as necessary
  • Inspect and test the safety sensors and remove debris or realign as necessary
  • Tighten all hardware
  • Open and close the garage door multiple times, looking closely for misalignment or suboptimal performance

Genie Garage Door Opener Warranty and Support

All Genie garage door openers come with limited warranties. Model-specific warranty information can be found online and in the owner’s manual. To initiate a warranty claim, have your model number and original sales receipt ready. From there, you can contact a Genie representative by starting a chat or submitting a question online. You can also contact the Genie dealer you purchased the product from.

Genie Garage Door Opener Accessories

In addition to its garage door opener units, Genie offers dozens of accessories to customize the system based on your needs. Multi-button remote controls, universal wall consoles, rail extender kits, a screw-drive lubricant and more are available through Genie and its distributors.

Genie Garage Door Openers FAQs

Like other well-made garage door openers, Genie’s products typically last between 10 and 15 years if well maintained.

Genie garage door openers equipped with 140-volt DC motors are best suited to lift heavy doors weighing up to 750 pounds. Three standouts are the MachForce (model 4062), the ChainMax 1000 (model 3022) and the SilentMax 1000 (model 3042).

Generally, .5 HP is adequate for lightweight and smaller doors, .75 HP is standard for two-door garages and motors with 1 HP and above are best suited for commercial units or heavier residential doors.
