Clopay has an outstanding reputation among homeowners and within the professional garage door community. The company’s roots date back to 1859 when it was founded in Cincinnati, Ohio as a paper wholesaler and window shade manufacturer (Clopay is an acronym for “cloth” and “paper”). Clopay didn’t enter the garage door industry until 1964, but things quickly took off from there.

After nearly four decades of making strategic acquisitions, pioneering new technologies and receiving rewards like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, Clopay relocated its headquarters to Mason, Ohio, where it still exists today. It makes all of its products in America across four manufacturing facilities and 56 distribution centers, and became the largest manufacturer of overhead doors in the U.S. in 2019.

Clopay Garage Door Collections Overview

Clopay Garage Door Materials and Construction

Clopay’s residential garage doors are made with either steel, composite overlays, natural wood or aluminum. You can customize the number of layers, the gauge of a steel door, and any door’s design and window style.

Steel Garage Door Lines

Steel doors are popular among homeowners thanks to their durability, rust-resistance and relative affordability. When you buy a steel door from Clopay, you’ll first choose a style from one of its steel collections: Modern Steel, Gallery Steel, Bridgeport Steel or Classic Steel. From there, pick how many layers you want it to have, from 1, 2 or 3, then select the steel’s gauge. The lower the number, the thicker and more durable the door. Standard steel doors from the Classic collection come in 24- and 25-gauge options.

If you’re insulating your garage door, which we highly recommend, you can pick a standard polystyrene insulation or Clopay’s Intellicore insulation. The latter is the company’s proprietary polyurethane foam insulation, known for its excellent energy efficiency.

On the design side, you’ll choose from multiple panel configurations, specialty windows and dozens of colors. Clopay’s steel doors are covered by a materials warranty and any residential replacement work performed by its Elite Authorized, Master Authorized and Advanced Authorized dealers.

Wood and Composite Wood Options

Clopay’s natural wood garage doors are available in several classic, modern and fully customizable designs. Classic doors feature non-insulated, single-layer panels available in Hemlock, Cedar, Redwood and Extira—Clopay’s proprietary, eco-friendly version of a wood composite. To customize a Reserve door, you can choose between a 2- and 5-layer construction, dozens of panel designs and a variety of wood species, including Luan, a tropical wood sourced from trees in Southeast Asia. Clopay’s wood is harvested sustainably and from naturally fallen trees.

Modern Aluminum and Glass Doors

If you’re looking for a sleek, minimalist door, Clopay’s glass and aluminum Avante series is the place to start. Not only do they look great and provide loads of natural light, but they’re also lightweight, energy efficient and do an outstanding job of resisting rust and corrosion.

Across the collection, full-view, tempered glass is framed by insulated or non-insulated commercial-grade aluminum panels. And if you live in an area prone to hurricanes and high winds, Clopay also offers WindCode-integrated doors. Instead of manually installing hurricane reinforcements, WindCode doors include commercial-grade struts, tracks, rollers and hardware. All you have to do is lock the door to help protect your garage and home from hurricane-force winds.

Clopay Garage Door Styles and Design Options

Clopay categorizes its doors by traditional, carriage house and modern styles. You can customize them based on your home’s architecture, the climate you live in, your personal style and more.

Traditional Panel Designs

Drive down almost any residential neighborhood in America and you’re likely to see dozens of traditional garage doors. Their eye-catching yet understated design is the perfect complement to a Dutch Colonial, ranch-style, Craftsman or new construction home. A common feature in traditional garage door styles is raised or recessed panels arranged symmetrically across the door. With Clopay, you can choose from short or long panels, steel or wood construction, and from dozens of colors and finishes.

Carriage House Styles

Clopay’s carriage house doors tastefully mimic the aesthetics of traditional swing-out doors while functioning just like other modern garage doors. You’ll find carriage house styles throughout Clopay’s Coachman, Canyon Ridge, Reserve and Gallery collections. From square and horizontal windows and crossbuck panels to colonial-style lift handles and other decorative hardware, the customization options go on and on. Carriage house garage doors look great with most home styles, but farmhouse and Tudor homes are particularly well suited for them.

Contemporary and Modern Collections

Sleek lines. Minimalist design. Horizontal windows and an eye-catching use of negative space. These are a few hallmarks of contemporary and modern garage door styles, and Clopay has plenty of options to choose from. Its Avante and Modern Steel collections include customizable features like full-view aluminum and glass doors, flush horizontal panels, mixed materials, matte finishes and more. Modern garage door styles are popular among homeowners with contemporary and mid-century modern homes.

Window Options

Choosing the right windows can make or break the overall look of your garage door and how well it speaks to your home’s architecture. As with all of its door components, Clopay offers an impressive suite of window insert styles and materials.

To start narrowing down your glass options, think about your priorities when it comes to your garage door. If you value privacy, a frosted, tinted or mirrored glass is the way to go. If you’re looking to maximize natural light, go with clear glass. Clopay also offers impact-rated glass if you live in a hurricane-prone area, and high-altitude glass to help equalize pressure for homes 5,000 feet or more above sea level.

Clopay Garage Door Pricing and Value

Clopay doors are available at stores like The Home Depot and through its extensive network of over 3,000 independent dealers. The price you pay for your door depends on its size, materials, level of insulation, where you live and several other factors.

Value Factors and Return on Investment

The national average garage door replacement cost is between $750 and $6,000. But to put in perspective just how valuable replacing your garage door can be, it could net you a whopping 193.9% return on investment according to the 2024 Cost vs. Value report—more than any other residential home project.

Beyond the obvious ROI benefits, modern garage doors prioritize energy efficiency, which could save you money on utilities in the long term. Other benefits of new garage doors include enhanced security features, weather-resistant features, generous warranties and increased curb appeal.

 Installation and Dealer Network

Clopay’s network consists of over 3,000 authorized dealers across the country, and the company’s products can also be purchased at The Home Depot. Its dealers have been carefully vetted and are categorized into three tiers based on their experience and reputation. Advanced, Elite and Master Authorized Dealers are known for their expertise, and dealers from all tiers offer a minimum 1-year warranty on Clopay replacement doors. Clopay Door Maintenance and Care

Like all garage doors, Clopay doors require seasonal and annual maintenance to keep them in tip-top shape for years.

Routine Maintenance Requirements

Inspect your garage door at least twice annually, preferably at the beginning of summer and winter. Components to inspect include:

You’ll need to consult your owner’s manual for specific maintenance requirements for your door’s style and material, but these are some typical procedures you can expect to perform.

  • Lubricate all moving parts with a silicone-based product
  • Visually inspect the tracks and clean as necessary
  • Inspect the safety sensors and remove debris or realign as necessary
  • Tighten all hardware
  • Check for proper door balance
  • Patch dents, stain or repaint as necessary

Repairs and Replacement Parts

Proper maintenance will lengthen the useful life of your garage door and its parts, but all of them are prone to wear and tear and will eventually need to be replaced. Clopay replacement parts can be found at most of its 3,000 authorized dealers and The Home Depot.

Some common DIY projects include repairing or replacing windows, seals, rollers and hardware. Clopay and Garage.com recommend professional repair or replacement when working with dangerous components like springs and door panels. Never attempt a DIY garage door project if you’re not comfortable or familiar with all necessary safety procedures.

Clopay Warranty and Service Support

Clopay offers a standard 1-year installation warranty if the work was performed by one of its authorized dealers. It offers 13 product warranties, each unique to a specific model. Premium Series Classic Steel doors, for example, have 5-year warranty coverage for panels, 10 years for windows and 3 years for hardware and springs. Visit Clopay’s warranty page for model-specific information.

Warranty Claims and Service Process

To initiate a warranty claim, start by contacting the dealer you purchased the door from. Have your receipt handy, as well as the door’s serial number and a description of the issue or defect. After the dealer submits the claim on your behalf, Clopay will inspect and validate the issue, then send any necessary parts to the dealer. Labor costs are reimbursable for up to a year from the date the products were shipped. To help ensure a smooth process, register your product on Clopay’s website and keep copies of all product-related paperwork.

Clopay Garage Doors FAQs

The average lifespan of a Clopay door is 15 to 30 years, which is similar to most other high-quality doors from reputable companies. How long your door lasts depends on how well you maintain it and the materials it’s made of.

Regardless of your door’s age, you can find almost all replacement parts through the company’s 3,000-plus dealer network or at The Home Depot.
