Screw drive mechanisms open and close the door using a direct-drive system that moves the trolley seamlessly and quietly across the threaded rod. These actions are most often powered by a DC motor, which offers superior power and speed while keeping the noise level low.

There are five core components of a screw drive system, each with its own important job to do. In addition to remote controls and a wall panel, a new screw drive unit will include these components: 

  1. Motor unit: DC motors are standard for screw drive openers thanks to their quiet, fast and powerful performance. 
  2. Threaded steel rod: The heart of the system, the rod bears the weight of the door and rotates to move the trolley along the rail. 
  3. Trolley: The trolley is attached to both the rod and the garage door itself. It moves directly across the threaded rod to raise and lower the door.
  4. Rail assembly: When its pieces are attached, the rail assembly forms a channel that houses and guides the rod and the trolley’s movement. 
  5. Safety sensors: Like all other types of garage door openers, screw drive units come with infrared safety sensors.

The Mechanics Behind Screw Drive Operation

When you press the button on your remote, the motor activates and begins rotating the threaded rod. This rotation sets the trolley, which is attached to the rod, into motion. As the trolley moves horizontally across the rod, the door opens or shuts.

Genie has an exclusive deal with The Home Depot, meaning you can only purchase them in-store or online through the big box retailer.   

How To Choose the Right Screw Drive Garage Door Opener

There are several factors to consider before you can narrow down which screw drive garage door opener is right for you. Since belt drives and screw drives both operate quietly and are priced similarly, you’re likely looking at screw drive units because you have a heavy or oversized door.  

The horsepower (HP) of your garage door opener’s motor determines how much weight it can lift and how quickly it can lift it. Most standard-weight, two-car residential garage doors only require a ½ HP motor for optimal performance, though ¾ and 1 HP are also common.
